Today, I’m excited to share the story of an unforgettable marriage proposal that I had the honor of capturing in the heart of an iconic French landmark the legendary Château de Versailles. With its majestic gardens, stunning fountains, and regal ambiance, the Château de Versailles is undoubtedly one of the most romantic places in the world.
The Château de Versailles is a marvel, the stuff of dreams across the globe, and undoubtedly one of the most iconic and romantic locations for a wedding proposal.
It was in this romantic French setting that Rigo proposed to Mariana. A proposal at the Château de Versailles that, let me reassure you from the start, ended in a “yes!” in front of the most symbolic spot in the château’s expansive gardens, in the Trianon district.
The Château de Versailles offers an exceptional setting for a wedding proposal, blending grand history—having inspired the world since the time of Louis XIV—with a dreamlike atmosphere, featuring its French gardens in the grand tradition of Romanticism.
The story of this wedding proposal begins for me with a last-minute request, received just the day before. During a couple’s shoot in the streets of Paris, an American woman vacationing in the City of Light asked for my Instagram, as her brother wished to propose to his beloved in the gardens of the Château de Versailles the following day. My task was clear: to capture the surprise proposal in total secrecy. That evening, the future fiancé reached out after reviewing my work to organize the proposal. An extremely tight deadline for a thrilling assignment.
Preparing a wedding proposal at Versailles requires careful planning and a bit of strategy. We didn’t have much time to get everything organized, and Rigo, the future fiancé, had limited communication with me to avoid raising any suspicions from Mariana. The goal was to navigate the vast gardens unnoticed, while subtly guiding Rigo to the perfect spot for the proposal, ensuring that the moment would be flawless.
The future fiancé didn’t have a specific location in mind, but he wanted to propose somewhere private and intimate, yet still surrounded by the grandeur of Versailles. After discussing it with him, we decided on a symbolic and romantic spot: the Temple of Love, located in the Petit Trianon. A small temple surrounded by lush greenery, exuding romance in a peaceful atmosphere— the perfect setting for a wedding proposal, with all the symbolism it entails
One of the biggest challenges for me as a photographer was capturing this moment without drawing Mariana’s attention, as she thought she was simply visiting one of France’s most iconic landmarks. Fortunately, in a place as touristy as Versailles, blending in is not difficult, and despite my professional photography equipment, I was able to remain discreet.
The element of surprise was crucial for this proposal. I had to quietly follow the couple around the château gardens for nearly an hour, only getting ahead of them once Rigo had picked the spot and was still uncertain about the perfect place to get down on one knee. From there, it was a race against time to find the right angle, to scout out spots where I could hide while still having a clear view of the couple. Finally, after a long walk, the moment arrived, and the couple reappeared in front of me.
After wandering the gardens and soaking in the beauty of the place, with Rigo feeling a bit stressed, the couple finally arrived before the Temple of Love, right before my eyes. A small temple nestled within the grounds of the Petit Trianon, surrounded by lush greenery. The moment was perfect, and I was ready to capture the proposal, discreetly positioned to ensure Mariana wouldn’t suspect anything, with the most beautiful framing. I even had to stop a few visitors who tried to pass in front of me, without having time to explain why.
Rigo, whose nervousness I could feel, stood in front of the temple for about two minutes before making his move, but he gathered the courage to propose to his future fiancée and pop the big question. I was there, at a respectful distance so as not to arouse suspicion, ready to capture every expression, every emotion, and I was able to successfully immortalize this moment filled with love and happiness.
After the proposal, once the emotion had settled, I was able to join the couple and meet Rigo and Mariana. She was still in shock from the proposal, floating on cloud nine. Rigo, too, seemed to be in another world, overwhelmed by the pressure of making his proposal at the Château de Versailles perfect.
We took our time strolling through the gardens for a couple’s photoshoot, during which I was able to capture all the love this wonderful couple shared. An unforgettable session, full of sweetness and romance, perfectly in tune with the royal ambiance of Versailles a moment that will remain one of the most unique in my career as a photographer.
